The Passing of an Ethiopianist

Harold Marcus, a long time scholar of Africa and author of the highly acclaimed “A History of Ethiopia”, died at the age of 67 on January 16, 2003. According to a statement released by David Wiley, Director of the African Studies Center at Michigan State University, the Professor died of “faulty heart valve”. “Harold was an important bulwark in our Arts and Letters faculty for most of the life of the Center, and he had an immense reputation in African history of Ethiopia and of Northeast Africa…” said the statement. “He leaves a legacy of many Africanist historians from his long career and many works on Ethiopia and Haile Selassie.” His wife, Cressida Marcus, and his 13-year-old daughter, Emma, survive him.
